CHARACTER
CHARACTER NAME: Heiji Hattori
SERIES: Detective Conan
CANON POINT: After chapter 803
LOSS: His Omamouri. It was made for him by his childhood friend and she truly believes that it keeps him safe as the only two times he didn't have it he was seriously injured. Heiji makes fun of her for being superstitious and pretends he doesn't believe in the Omamouri but regardless of this he wears it to every case and every Kendo match, even lets his best friend borrow it for awhile and it saves said friend's life because of an extraordinary coincidence. He makes it out to be a minor thing and an annoyance but it's actually very important to him.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER:
Hattori first came into contact with the series protagonist when he grew tired of everyone comparing him to this 'High School Detective Kudo Shinichi' guy and decided to take a trip to Tokyo to face off against this famed detective to prove that he was the better. However, upon arriving in Tokyo he learns that Kudo has been away for some time and starts asking around about him. He talks to a girl named Sonoko who directs him to the detective agency Conan lives at with his childhood friend Ran Mouri. While there he stumbles into a case and declares that if he solves it first then he's officially beaten Kudo even if he's not there. He works through the case with what seems like relative ease and ends up falling into a trap to convict the wrong person since he's so focused on beating the legendary detective.
Miraculously, Kudo does show up-looking a little worse for wear and solves the case, stating that detective work isn't a competition and teaching Hattori a very important lesson about not rushing through cases. Shortly after that Heiji returns to Osaka and doesn't reappear until later when he attends a Holmes convention in attempt to find Kudo. He's once again disappointed since the only familiar faces he comes across are that of the Kogoro, Ran, and Conan. Another murder occurs and Heiji is thrown right into another case- this time making sure not to rush through things. It is here that he catches on that Conan is far too smart for his age and his mannerisms and reasoning match that of the detective he'd been hoping to see-Kudo Shinichi.
Naturally, he's skeptic of the idea as it's a little unbelievable a person could go from high school sized to elementary sized. He eventually figures out the truth and tricks Conan into revealing himself by pretending to let Conan use him as a sleeping detective and reveal the killer-he later corners Conan and forces him to reveal everything. From there, the two form a pretty shaky friendship that strengthens through every case they solve together.
Hattori has a bit of quirk as he's always wearing the same 'SAX' cap. If he's on a case then he is generally wearing the hat with the bill facing front and when he's not on a case he wears it backwards. When a particularly complex case gets tossed in his lap he turns the hat from facing backwards to frontwards almost if it's like an on and off switch.
He's pretty straightforward and usually comes off as a bit dense so it's easy to underestimate him which he can and will use to his advantage. Even though he's pretty simple minded he is still a genius and can fit things together as well as Kudo or any of the other detective. Like his friend Kudo, he has a hero complex just as bad as his eastern rival or perhaps worse as he is ready and willing to bust down a door just because a little blood got on the handle or smash in a window because it's the quickest route to the victim. Because of his rashness when it comes to his hero complex he's been called hot-blooded. Which is actually an accurate way to describe him.
Of the detectives and thief that frequently guest stars in the detective Conan series he is by far the easiest one to aggravate. He will get angry if someone calls his Kansai accent 'weird' or 'strange', insults Osaka, talks in a false Kansai dialect, calls him hot-blooded, or insinuate that he's not qualified to be a detective. Or, if he takes something the wrong way he will respond negatively and… loudly. He's not prone to violence just yelling.
Hattori is extremely proud of being from the Kansai region and loves to drag Kudo all over Osaka and show him everything its got that's better than what Tokyo has. He even drags his friend to his favorite places to grab a meal and frequently tells Conan about famous dishes and things that Osaka has to offer the next time he comes to visit. Even if they have since become the best of friends Hattori still gets seriously ticked when people start to compare him to Shinichi.
He's normally a friendly guy and seems to be better at making friends than Kudo as he has the detective of the east beat when it comes to social skills and reading people. He's good enough that he can tell what style a person is more suited too just be looking at them. Something Shinichi is not able to do. However it's arguable that they're still evenly matched as there are things that Shinichi can do that Hattori can't.
Hattori is usually pretty transparent and it's not hard to tell what he's thinking. Especially if he's feeling guilty as it's usually written on his face. Kudo has pointed this out when he figured out that Hattori was the one to break a bottle of wine. It had been an accident, of course, but the detective still felt awful and became sulky. He is capable of hiding his intentions when solving a case though, as he has tricked a murderer into revealing where she hid concrete evidence by accusing someone else and using fake evidence to make her think she missed something.
He is only person that Conan feels comfortable enough with to tease and Heiji is all too happy to return the favor. They get along so well that people have made the comment that they're 'like brothers.' And, because Hattori is aware of the horrible danger Conan lives in he's constantly worried about his friend and will drop everything to get to Tokyo and go check up on him if something serious has happened. Heiji is also one of the people Conan trusts the most as he's asked him for several favors involving investigating the black organization.
Like Shinichi, Hattori also has a childhood friend that he's in love with. Unlike Shinichi, he is not aware yet that he is in love with Kazuha Toyama and thinks he only sees her as a friend doesn't even recognize he gets jealous when other guys talk to her. He knows he get irritated and grumpy but he's under the impression that's because she's like his little follower.
Over all, Hattori is a pretty simple guy and easy to get along with so long as no one points out his accent. Despite coming off as dense he's actually a brilliant detective and has proved this in the series time and time again.
ABILITIES: He has no super human powers or supernatural aspects about him. All of his abilities save one are things that a normal human being would be capable of learning. That one ability being his powers of deductive reasoning that make him such a great detective and earned him the title of 'High School Detective of the West.'
Aside from being a genius he's actually quite fluent in English and gifted in Kendo as he's the team captain at his school and won every match he's fought except for one which resulted in a draw when both Hattori and his opponent ended up injured.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:
It was impossible to concentrate on reading a book with that horrible racket going on in the hallway. What was that infernal noise anyway? It sounded like an angry cat in heat had decided to set off fireworks in order to get some attention. The irate detective scowled at his door for a moment as the noise dyed down and he was able reopen his Ellery Queen book.
The hallway stayed silent for all of thirty seconds before it seemed like thousands of firecrackers were all going off outside his door. All right. Enough was enough. Heiji set his book down a little more force than necessary before stomping over the door and nearly yanking it off the hinges.
“WOULD YA KNOCK IT-Huh?” His outraged shout was cut short as he noticed immediately that there was no one outside his room. He frowned heavily at this discovery and stepped out to get a good look and make sure no one was playing a trick on him. Once he was satisfied he returned to his room and grabbed his book again. The moment he started reading, however a very loud and very annoying toy siren seemed to be going off in the hall. Heiji chose to grit his teeth and made an attempt to just ignore the unwanted noise. Not long after, however there was a sound like a building collapsing in the hallway. Hattori jumped out his chair and rushed back to the door to yank it open.
“Oi! What’s goin’ on out-....here?” Once again the hallway was empty and he returned to his book only to be interrupted a final time by the unmistakable sound of a teapot going off.
“...Oh I get it. This is one of th’ curse things Kudo told me about...”
FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE:
**Hattori speaks with an accent and more informally than any of the other detective's in the series. He tends to drop the 'G' from words ending in 'ing' and his "your's" sound more like 'yer'
Alright. Who's th' wise guy that's keepin' me up at night? There's plenty o' time durin' the day for ya t' make all the noise ya want. But us normal people like t' do this thing at night known as sleepin'. I don't know, perhaps Ya've heard of it, it's supposed t' be good for ya an' keep yer immunities up and help yer brain to function like it's supposed t'. I don't know about you but my brain's kinda somethin' I need functionin' so I can solve cases an figure out a way home.
But hey, if ya wanna continue t' be a pest go right a head- just be warned that I'm pretty good at Kendo an' I don't really like bein' kept up at night. I might just get tired o' all th' explosions and help ya t' sleep with a nice hard knock t' the head.
INTENT: I have never actually played Hattori before despite him being one of my favorite characters and really wanted to give it a shot. Aside from that, I love his accent and it seems like a challenge but also like a lot of fun to write.
